Kid-Friendly Search Engines at Riverside
Looking for answers to your questions without getting all of the thousands of hits that don’t provide what you are really looking for? Try using one of these to get better research results for elementary age children:
Mrs. Staff’s class and Mrs. Gauger’s class at Riverside used them to research their animals for their animal projects.
Riverside Students research landmarks
Third-graders at Riverside Elementary have been working hard in social studies researching U.S. landmarks. Their research began with instruction from Instructional Media Center Specialist Sheila Dembowski on how to find and use search engines and Google maps to research and map their landmark.
Once their research was done, they created posters with information about and pictures of their landmark. They especially liked learning how many miles and in which direction their landmark was located from Ringle.
The students presented their projects in small groups to their classmates.
“I really wanted to do Buckingham Fountain in Chicago because it has lots of lights on it and I’d really like to see it some day,” said Sydney H.
Brodey S. said his favorite part of the project was “getting the pictures from the Internet.”
Kendra D. knew that her landmark, Grand Teton National Park, is west of Ringle, and is excited that some day her parents want to take her whole family there to see it.
Glogster at Rothschild
Students in Mrs. Johnson's classroom have been busy creating different styles of poetry. One piece for their unit deals with creating an Acrostic Poem about the student. Each student created a poem through the program, Glogster. Why not stop on by and check them out! Click on the student's name below to see their online poster.

Westward Expansion at Mountain Bay
The third grade teachers met with Mrs. Wardall to discuss their Westward Movement unit. A lot of ideas were shared and plans were changed many times throughout the process.
Mrs. Wardall had created a Westward Movement Webquest that was going to be used but was not used this year. It was however used by a class at Rothschild. A couple of the classes chose to do something else and one class decided to do an ABC book based on the Westward Movement.
The Westward Movement ABC book that was created turned out great! Check it out on the main page of the Mountain Bay Library site. Students took their information they had gathered, decided on a format for the book and entered their information in the template Mrs. Wardall created in Publisher. Mrs. Wardall pulled all the Publisher documents together and uploaded them into FlipSnack, a web 2.0 tool. We are looking at getting a copies made for the classroom and the library.

Mrs. Bindl's class was studying the author Patricia Polacco and wanted a way to share a favorite book by the author. Students wrote booktalks on their favorite Patricia Polacco book and used that as their script for recording in to Voicethread. Mrs. Wardall scanned the book covers and set students up to record their scripts. To view all booktalks click on this link.
